![]() New this year was the Game Day Live Division, which allows a high school’s cheerleaders and pep band to perform together to recreate the excitement of a true game day atmosphere. All teams competing in the championships had to qualify at a regional event or camp in order to participate. The dance competition is judged on choreography, technique, execution and overall effect. Cheerleading teams are judged on their crowd leading abilities, stunting and tumbling skills and overall performance. Internationally, 62 teams from 12 countries also competed. The two events showcased 25,000 athletes across 1,270 teams from 36 different states. “They spend over 90% of their time focused on building strong school spirit in their schools, and this is an opportunity to highlight the invaluable contributions they make in their communities as well as their remarkable athleticism.” “It is indeed an honor to highlight these amazing student-athletes at this championship,” said Bill Seely, President of Varsity Spirit. The squad celebrated senior night on October 10 th, inviting all seniors along with their parents, to recognized at halftime of the game. Sassano has been an NCA All-American for all four years of high school. Coleman was a member of the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) All-America Team for one season. Township Cheerleading is led by captains Paige Attanasi, Aubrey Bythrow, Emma Coleman, Olivia Drewry, Mia Lauletta and Lauren Sassano. We were all so happy to be cheering in person and are hopeful that it will continue.” I am so proud of all of them and their collective level of commitment and enthusiasm under challenging circumstances. “Twelve of our 18 seniors made varsity cheer teams in the fall or winter season of their freshman year. “This is one of the most talented classes of cheerleaders in the history of Township Cheerleading,” said head coach and Bunker Hill Middle School counselor Jenny Kerfoot. They have relocated their cheerleading area to the endzone next to the band and have canceled all fall competition. The squad of 33 girls strong – including 18 seniors - also has moved to outdoor practices because of COVID-19 protocols and are cheering for all home football games and several soccer games. Social distancing, required masks and a season-opening football win over Shawnee on October 10 th made the 2020 Washington Township High School varsity cheerleaders cheer all the louder.
